The Church of Santa Maria della Catena was built at the start of the fifteenth century on the top of a tall staircase in the small Piazza Doganella. It is considered to be a superb example of the Gothic-Catalan style, with some renaissance influence.
The church owes its name to the long chain that is fixed to the outside wall, which blocked access to the antique port of Palermo.
Before entering the church you can find three arches decorated with carvings. The interior is enhanced by the seventeenth century decorations; for example there are frescoes by Olivio Sozzi and a sarcophagus from the fifteenth century.
